Researching George Leon Rollins - My grandfather
Today in my research I found the first Census my grandfather shows up on I believe. It is a 1910 Census from Uinta County, Wyoming. This is the Census for Township 16 and 15 Lyman Precinct (Lyman Village). Census taken on the 25th and 26th of April, 1910 by John WeField.
*note* In this Census it looks like the last name is written Bollins but it is obviously Rollins.
In this census it says he was 17 at the time of the Census. The following information is on this Census:
His father James W. Rollins is a farmer at this time.
Rollins, James W.(54) was born in California, his father was born in New York and his mother was born in Ohio.
Harriet A (45) was born in Utah, her father was born in England, her mother was born in England.
Their children followed as below:
Leona (20), George Leon (17), Irene (15), James H (13), Harrit E (10), Joseph L (8), Porter E (6), Ruby (3).
Something else I thought was interesting was that their neighbors where the Blackners and the William C. Rollins families. Of coarse!
Now of course, if anyone knows about our family history there has always been a debate on when my grandfather was born. Well, according to this he was born in the year 1893.
Another thing I have found was George Leon's Draft Card (Registration Card for the Military). What an awesome find. It states there that his birthday was February 2nd 1893. At this point he is 24 years old. On this card he has stated he is a farmer (self employed). It also states that he is supporting his Father, Mother and younger sister at this time so he is asking to be exempted from the draft to support them. What I have found funny is that the person interviewing the applicant has to put a bit about them and it states that he is short and stout, blue eyes and light brown hair. (Well, I already knew that but it is cool to know that they have that type of thing on the cards)
I love how he signed his card Geo. Leon Rollins. (Leon was pronounced "Lyn" by the way)
In the next census of 1920 I found him under the name of Leon Robbins. Yes, I know, I think someone can not read because it obviously says Rollins. Anyhow, this is the first census with his wife and daughter. What is stated on this:
Leon (26) is a farmer.
Viola (20) was born in Wyoming. Her mother and father were both born in Scotland and their Mother tongue is Scotch.
Myrtle (1) was born in Wyo (which I assume is Wyoming). And they spelled her name Mortal at Ancestry.
In the 1930 census he finally got his name correctly spelled. Leon Rollins. This Census was "Outside Lyman Town".
Here not much has changed except for a few more kids are added here is what is on the Census:
Leon Rollins (37)
M Viola Rollins (30)
Myrtle E Rollins (11)
Carma Rollins (10)
Wayne L Rollins(7)
Beth Rollins (5)
William A Rogers (31)
That is correct. A man named William A. Rogers lived with them and worked as a "Laborer" for Leon. William was born in Maine and so were both of this parents.
Also, right above the Rollins' on this Census is a Leland R. Eyre. I was curious if this person was related and found out this is a cousin of Leons through his mothers side. Another person added to my list.
Call me boring and all but it is exciting to find that Leon was obviously close to his cousins.
